We are pleased to announce that Jane Carter will be the new curator of the Friends of Historic Huletts Landing, helping expand our physical and digital collections and will also assume the responsibility of planning our art shows, working with local artists to present their work (and give us more excuses to gather during the summer for wine and cheese at opening receptions!). We are grateful to Tom Keating for his contributions over many years to the art shows. He will continue to act as a trustee and our treasurer.

Please join us for the Friends of Historic Huletts Landing Annual Meeting. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for our activities and ways to improve our value to the Huletts community.
We also welcome new volunteers who are interested in participating in our projects such as speaker programs, art shows, children’s programs, digital archives, membership coordination and oral histories.
It will take place on Thursday, September 2 at 9:00am at the Library and Gallery. It will be followed by a trustee meeting where we will thank Tom Keating for his generous contributions over many years as the FHHL curator and introduce our new curator, Jane Carter. Tom will continue as the FHHL Treasurer.

Friends of Historic Huletts Landing is proud to host the Lake George Association’s Floating Classroom on August 16th. This event is for children, ideally 8 years of age and up. FHHL will be requiring masks of all participants. Arrive 15 minutes early for an on-time departure from the Kapusinski Dock by Casino Beach at 10am to enjoy maximum time on the Lake. Please help offset the cost by donating $15 per person.
Only 20 spots available; RSVP is required to Suzy Shad 518-499-6966.
All children are welcome, however we do not recommend the program for those younger than 8 or 9. This is because some of the concepts may be difficult for the younger children to grasp. All participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and those under the age of 18 have to wear a life jacket for the duration of the program.
Our other COVID protocols are:
Unvaccinated individuals, including children under the age of 12 who are not yet vaccine eligible, must wear a mask.
Limited capacity will allow participants to be seated evenly spaced. Please note that you may not be 6 feet from the boat captain, crew, and staff.

If you have ever been curious about the “House on the Rock,” come hear Paul Turner talk of summers circa 1950 spent on the “Rockholm” property with Louise Marsh. She filled her house with antiques and art objects collected during a fascinating life. Paul also researched Louise Marsh through her descendants and will share wonderful photographs and illustrations. It is a don’t miss presentation!

Steve White is a retired filmmaker and a photographer who lives on a 23-foot sailboat much of the summer on Lake George. He loves to photograph in what he calls The Realm, an area near Huletts on the west side of the lake. His photographs capture the intense beauty of the natural world and wildlife activity that is astounding. Join us for a spectacular photography show and an artist’s view of life on the lake.

In addition to many of the impressive buildings that currently line Fifth Avenue, this illustrated presentation by Tom Keating will highlight buildings that once stood on the avenue, namely the mansions of the wealthy such as the Astors and the Vanderbilts.
$5 for non-members and attendees must be vaccinated.
The first art show of the season will have an opening reception on Saturday, July 10, from 5 to 7 PM. The FHHL Gallery will feature the work of noted watercolorist Ray Curran. Join us for refreshments, lovely artwork and the chance to meet the artist.
We are very lucky to have a memoir by Paul V. Turner, a retired professor of Art History at Stanford University, who told us that he had recently been recalling events from his childhood when his family spent summers at Huletts Landing.

It is surprising to see, as COVID-19 sweeps the world, how similar some of the challenges are to those the country faced when cholera arrived in 1832. In both cases America watched disease spread from country to country and wondered when, and for some, if, it would reach our shores. When it did, it appeared first in Whitehall, NY, to an America that was unprepared to cope with a virulent and unfamiliar disease.

Join LGLC staff to celebrate the grand opening of the Leeming Jelliffe Preserve’s trail system, Friday, September 7, 2018. The event will include a ribbon-cutting and dedication of the preserve.
Kick off the Summer lake season with us and converse with your fellow friends of Huletts Landing while we open the Library & Gallery, clean, pick up rubbish, rake leaves, weed, hang signs and do what we can to keep her looking sharp. We would LOVE your help and if you have tools even better!

The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has protected 37 acres in Huletts Landing, Washington County by purchasing a 33.3-acre upland piece and a conservation easement on the adjoining lower 3.7-acres lakefront property.

Adirondack Life magazine’s “At Home in the Adirondack’s” issue features a 10-page article showcasing Carrie Marie Burr’s photographs of three historic Huletts houses with a narrative by editor Annie Stoltie based on interviews with the homeowners. It is on news stands now. Featured are Lucy White’s 1882 “Seven Pines,” David and Marian Knight’s 1874 “Craigdarroch,” and Peter Suozzo’s 1917 “Ferncliff.” The story also highlights our larger effort, capturing images for the Historic Camps of Huletts Landing Project on which FHHL and Carrie Marie Burr are working.

We are lucky to have Ellen Apperson Brown talk about her great uncle the Lake George preservationist John S. Apperson Jr. who is the subject of her recently published book.
The auction invites the work of talented amateurs and experienced professional artists of all ages who retain most of the sale price! Everyone with an artistic bent, whether photography, painting, hand crafts, sculpture or woodworking is invited to participate. Grandchildren’s work is especially popular with Grandparents. It’s a fun event and a chance to schmooze with your neighbors near the end of Summer.
This has been an extremely popular event each year and draws 80 to 100 people. It is a silent Auction where you write your bids on cards by the painting or other work of art. If you win you then pay our esteemed Treasurer-Curator-Event Organizer.

This newsletter information is a comprehensive update of the work of our volunteer fire department. Your 2016 donations enabled the community to obtain 5 AED’s and certify 75 residents in CPR . We now have Medical Direction from Glens Falls Hospital, for the community AED that is mounted on the caddie shack at the Huletts Golf Course. Our newly acquired Stair Chair has already been used 3 times in medical responses. Firemen are now being given additional video training at our fire house. An ice rescue pole, extending to 60 feet, has been added to our rescue and fire fighting equipment.
Our first children’s event of the summer will be hosted by Bernie Hoffman of the Pember Museum and feature animals from around the globe. It is a hands-on morning, she will have hides or pelts, along with antlers and skulls of animals native to Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America and Australia. From Zebras to Kangaroos, it will be a world of fun. And of course she will bring an animal friend to introduce to everyone.
Please join us at a wine and cheese reception for the opening of our gallery show of the work of Peter Mitchell. The show will run until August 12, but don’t miss the opening. Peter Mitchell has lived, hiked and photographed Lake George for more than 30 years. His discerning eye is always searching for breath-taking new perspectives. One of his current goals is to hike and photograph all 175+ mountains, peaks, hills, cliffs and ledges that surround Lake George, each with their own unique view of the lake.
With more than 120 different cards, the Pickel collection is likely the most comprehensive of cards of Huletts Landing specifically. These encompass real photo cards, the color lithography cards from Germany made from photographs taken by the Detroit Photographic Company and many more recent cards up to color photographs from Richard Dean.
Come re-wine at a fundraiser for the outreach program of the Women’s Guild of Huletts Landing. Bring a bottle of wine and an appetizer to share.The outreach program provides funds for local needs like fuel, food, clothing and scholarships.
Broadway is the only street which runs the whole length of Manhattan island. Tom Keating, curator and treasurer of the FHHL is also a Big Apple Greeter, part of a Welcome-Visitor Service from NYC Volunteers. He walked Broadway over five days and took photos of whatever interested him and you will see it all in this presentation. Broadway is rich in 19th. and early 20th. century architecture and the character of the street changes as you move through different neighborhoods. Come enjoy a richly illustrated talk!
